Preventative Dental Care
Dr. Kim and his team at Covell Family Dentistry highly value preventative dentistry and want to equip our patients with knowledge and services to maintain their healthy smiles.
Prevention Starts at Home
We emphasize good oral hygiene practices such as brushing with a soft bristle brush and high fluoridated toothpaste at least twice a day, in addition to daily flossing. Xylitol gums or mints after meals are also a good way to prevent decay. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that bacteria cannot metabolize, which prevents their acidic by-product from being produced, which causes decay. Xylitol is also believed to be able to remineralize the deep layers of the enamel.
One of the most powerful ways to establish good preventative care is to come twice a year for regular check ups. During these checkups, x-rays may be taken as needed, in addition to a thorough examination to check for pits and early signs of decay. Steps can then be taken to stop the decay and prevent the need for further intervention. Other things we look for during a regular check up are signs of teeth grinding, wear, cracks in the teeth, infection, gum disease, and signs of oral cancer.
Regular cleanings by a dental hygienist are also very important in preventative care. The dental hygienist will provide a thorough cleaning, ridding the teeth of plaque and calcified deposits that collect in spaces that are hard-to-reach, even with careful brushing and flossing.
Fluoride is also a great tool available for preventative care. Fluoride incorporates itself into the matrix of your tooth enamel, strengthening it and making it less susceptible to dental caries. We offer fluoride tablets for children as well as fluoride varnish during cleanings, a topical application on the surfaces of the teeth. We also offer fluoride trays that are customized to fit your teeth and jaw perfectly to maximize contact between your teeth and the high concentration fluoride.
We also provide sealants which are made of a resin material that is excellent for filling in and covering grooves and pits in teeth that are susceptible to plaque food particle build up which prevents decay.
Bruxism, or teeth grinding is often stress induced. The strong vertical and lateral forces can lead to advanced teeth wear, cracks, gum recession, jaw pain, and headaches. Clenching can also cause similar problems. We can create a customized night guard for you, which is a great option to help protect your teeth and jaw from the damage of bruxism and clenching.
