Cosmetic Dental Treatments
Dental concerns include pain, sensitivity, and discomfort but many people’s concerns include the cosmetic aspect of dentistry.
Covell Family Dental can help. How? We will develop a personalized treatment plan to fit your needs and budget, explain all your options to ensure that you have the healthiest and most beautiful smile you can have.
Professional Teeth Whitening
Regular flossing and brushing are crucial to maintaining healthy teeth, but despite those practices, teeth do not maintain whiteness. Why do teeth yellow?
Enamel is the white porous outer layer of a tooth, and, as it thins, the tooth appears less white. Aging is the main cause of enamel thinning, allowing the yellow dentin underneath to show through. However other factors can contribute to the yellowing of teeth as well such as:
- Staining of the enamel from foods such as coffee, tea or wine
- Staining from tobacco use
- Trauma, which your teeth can respond to by producing more dentin which darkens the appearance of the tooth
- Medications/medical treatments such as certain antibiotics in children, some antihistamines or antipsychotics, chemotherapy, and radiation.
As you have seen in drugstores, there are many teeth whitening options such whitening toothpaste or strips. Covell Family Dental also offers a professional take-home treatment option, which is faster and more effective making it more convenient.
The process includes Dr. Kim taking an impression of your teeth to create a customized tray that ensures that the bleaching agent is in constant contact with your enamel. The details on the most effective way to wear your trays will be explained by the staff. The benefit is that the whitening can take place in the comfort of your own home, at your convenience.

Metal-Free Fillings and Crowns
Dr. Kim also uses tooth-colored composites for fillings and crowns to create a more natural smile. The other benefit of composite over the traditionally used silver-colored amalgam is that it is more durable and is not susceptible to expanding when exposed to heat or cold, making loosening of the filling or crown more likely. A crown is a tooth-colored cap that protects a damaged tooth by encasing it to prevent future problems and to restore function as well as esthetics.
Composite fillings are tooth colored restorations to strengthen and repair teeth that are damaged by cavities or trauma or everyday wear. They can also be used cosmetically to repair chipped teeth, fill in gaps, or recontour a tooth.
