Crowns & Bridges
At Covell Family Dental, we are dedicated to working with you to ensure optimal dental health. Crowns and bridges are options we often employ to achieve that goal. A crown is tooth-colored cap that protects a damaged tooth by encasing it to prevent future problems and to restore function as well as esthetics.
Crowns and bridges are commonly used to address the issue of compromised teeth or missing spaces. The professional team at Covell Family Dental have years of experience providing our patients with high quality crowns and bridges that restore good oral health. You may also be surprised to see how these dental restorations can improve your appearance and boost your self-confidence!
Do I Need a Crown?
Crowns can be an excellent treatment choice for the following:
- Restoring teeth damaged by a large area of decay or previous fillings
- Protecting a fractured tooth, or compromised tooth to prevent worsening damage
- Protecting a tooth after root canal treatment
- Providing stability following implants placement
- Improving the appearance of discolored, misshapen, damaged or worn, and poorly spaced teeth
Will My Crown Look Natural?
Dr. Kim and his team use porcelain or ceramic to create a customized metal-free crown that blends perfectly with your natural teeth. The benefits of using porcelain or ceramic are that they are more biocompatible, stronger, and look natural.
Ceramic is often used in the posterior teeth (molars) because it is more durable and can withstand grinding. However, ceramic is not as esthetic as porcelain, which is translucent and therefore more realistic.
The process of placing your customized dental crown includes gently removing all the damaged, decayed or compromised areas of the tooth and then taking an impression of your tooth to ensure perfect fit. A temporary crown is placed until the permanent crown is received from the lab. Dr. Kim will then permanently attach it and ensure that it fits comfortably.
What are Bridges Used For?
A bridge is a permanent solution for treatment of missing teeth or spaces. In addition to being a cosmetic concern, the space caused by a loss of a tooth can also affect your speech, cause other teeth to shift, and affect your bite and your ability to chew. Missing teeth can also lead to bone loss if not replaced.
Dr. Kim can create a customized bridge, which consists of artificial teeth that look just like your natural teeth and act as placeholders for the missing tooth. The artificial teeth are held in place by crowns on the adjacent teeth. Dental implants can also be used to add stability to the bridge.
