Tooth-Colored Fillings

At Covell Family Dental, we use tooth-colored composite fillings to strengthen and repair teeth that are damaged by cavities, trauma, or everyday wear. They can also be used cosmetically to repair chipped teeth, fill in gaps, or recontour a tooth.

What is a Cavity?

Cavities are decayed tooth structure as a result of bacteria or other sources of acid that break down the tooth. Contrary to popular belief, sugar itself is not the culprit but it does provide food for the bacteria to thrive and produce acid as a metabolic byproduct. Early on, cavities may not cause any symptoms and can be found during a routine dental exam, but they can also be the source of sensitivity to temperature/ sweets and even pain.

For prevention, Dr. Kim recommends you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and floss every night to remove plaque buildup. Cleanings and routine exams every six months can also aid in prevention and early detection.

What’s the Benefit of Using Composite Fillings?

Composite fillings are a great way to treat cavities or other damage because they are minimally invasive, save the maximum amount of original tooth, and are virtually undetectable. The procedure entails Dr. Kim removing the compromised area or caries, then "filling" the hole with composite resins that match your natural tooth color to maintain tooth structure.

This is important to prevent further damage, which could lead to other procedures such as root canals or tooth loss. It also maintains function, reduces tooth pain and sensitivity, and restores esthetics.
